Test for Macular Degeneration – it’s important to know the risk factors

May 25-30 is Macular Degeneration Awareness Week. Macular Degeneration (or MD) is Australia’s leading cause of blindness, it affects your central vision and early diagnosis is the key to slowing its progression.

The key risk factors are age (being 50 or older), a family history of MD, and being (or having been) a smoker. At Paul McCarthy Optometrist, our thorough and comprehensive eye examination includes screening for Macular Degeneration and referral where appropriate to ophthalmologists who specialise in treatment options to slow the progression of MD.

Do you have a family history of MD? Talk to your family, ask about older family members and any history of vision loss. Contact us to book a screening test (the test is completely painless) for Macular Degeneration today.

Buy a pair and give a pair with Paul McCarthy Optometrist and Seeing Eye to Eye

SETE little girl smallHere at Paul McCarthy Optometrist, we are great supporters of global vision charity Optometry Giving Sight (OGS) and we’re excited to announce that we have partnered with them so that you can support their ‘buy a pair and give a pair’ program, Seeing Eye to Eye.

Here’s how the program works:

  • when you buy a pair of glasses from Paul McCarthy Optometrist, we donate $5 on your behalf to Seeing Eye to Eye
  • your $5 can fund an eye test and a basic pair of glasses in some developing and under-resourced communities in places like Timor Leste, Papua New Guinea, the Pacific Islands, El Salvador, India and Sri Lanka
  • you’ll be helping children and adults open doors to education, work and future opportunities by giving them the gift of sight

Over 600 million people worldwide are blind or vision impaired simply because they don’t have access to an eye test and a basic pair of glasses. Perhaps you’ve not heard of Optometry Giving Sight? They have a wonderful website dedicated to their projects – have a look at it here
