Back to School eye tests for children

Back To School Eye Tests For Children 01 Posted February 11, 2014 by Drummoyne Optometry

The start of the school year is a very good time to have your child’s eyes checked. At Paul McCarthy Optometrist, we make children’s eye tests a positive and enjoyable experience.

Did you know that, along with allergies and asthma, eye disorders are the most common long-term health problems experienced by children? Around 1 in 4 Australian children suffer from an undetected vision problem. As a parent, you are best placed to observe and detect the signs of a potential vision problem. Some signs to watch for include:

  • One eye turns in or out while the other points straight ahead
  • Frequent blinking
  • Red or watery eyes
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Covering or closing one eye
  • Holding a book very close to read
  • Squinting or sitting very close when watching television
  • Complaints of headaches
  • Complaints of blurred or double vision

Optometrists Association Australia recommends that children have a full eye examination before starting school and regularly as they progress through primary and secondary school.
